Mycobacterial heparin-binding hemagglutinin (HBHA) functions as an adhesin for epithelial cells and induces bacterial auto-aggregation.Glycosylation of HBHA may protect the protein from proteolytic degradation (crucial for its stabilty), important for HBHA-mediated hemagglutination and for certain immunologic properties of the protein.
