Has a role in the biodegradation of cellulose. Together with the β-1,4-glucan-cellobiohydrolase (exo-glucanase) and the β-1,4-glucan-glucanohydrolase (endo-glucanase), it forms the cellulase enzyme system and catalyzes the breakdown of cellobiose into two molecules of glucose. EC 3.2.1.21.
