Organism Information
Organism NameHaloarcula hispanica strain ATCC 33960
Domain Archaea
Classification Phylum : Euryarchaeota
Class : Halobacteria
Orders : Haloferacales
Family : Haloarculaceae
Genus : Haloarcula
Species : hispanica
Strain : ATCC 33960
Taxonomic ID (NCBI) 634497
Genome Information
GenBank CP002921.1
EMBL CP002921.1
Organism Additional Information H. hispanica, a halophilic archaeon, is extraordinary among members of the Halobacteriaceae in that it displays particularly low restriction activity and is therefore important as one of the most tractable haloarchaea for archaeal genetic research. The membrane contains a high content of carotenoid pigments (bacterioruberin) which give red pigmentation to the cells. It needs at least 3.4 M NaCl (higher than that needed by H. volcanii) for good growth.

Sequence length 922 AA
Function The number and similarity of the S-layer glycoproteins may be used as a potential taxonomic marker for halophilic archaea. In addition to this, S-layer glycoproteins might be helpful as reporter molecules for studying the origin and evolution of archaea.

Glycan Information
Glycan Annotation N-glycan was identified as a branched trisaccharide containing a 225 Da residue which corresponds to a 2-amino-6-sulfo-2, 6-dideoxy-quinovose. Glcβ-1,4-Gal disaccharide was identified as the O-glycan. Acidic trisaccharides linked to N307.
Technique(s) used for Glycan Identification ESI-MS, MALDI-TOF, MS/MS after aminobenzamide (2-AB) labeling and NMR (DQF-COSY, HSQC, TOCSY and HMBC)
Protein Glycosylation linked (PGL) gene(s)
Additional CommentThis is the first time that a naturally occurring form of sulfoquinovosamine has been identified.
